Mirror Southerns

Saturday 07, May 2011

The Mirror Southerns took place at Lough Ree Yacht Club on the weekend of the 30th April/1st May 2011 under conditions of strong easterly winds and almost unbroken sunshine.  A fleet of 20 boats lined out for the start under race officer David Dickson. Three boats had come down from Sligo Yacht Club: Beth and Shauna Armstrong (photo below) in the Gold fleet, Ronan Armstrong and Jamie Gillen in the Silver fleet and Harry and Fergus Collins in the Bronze fleet.

This was no gentle introduction to the sailing season for the competitors as deep gusts brought one capsize after another. Those who had got in some early season practice and pre-event training from Sligo's Diarmuid Mullen felt the benefit but after race one the wind picked up further and the O.D. sent the fleet back to shore for an afternoon of table tennis instead of combined sailing and swimming.

Day two saw slightly more moderate conditions but the wind was still gusting to above 20 knots and this worked to the advantage of heavier crews. The Bronze fleet was won by Harry and Fergus Collins who now progress to Silver, the Silver fleet winners were Ronan Armstrong and Jamie Gillen. The overall event winners were Graham Daly and Eoin Hickey of Skerries Sailing Club with Beth and Shauna Armstrong taking 6th place overall.
