2023 Nationals

We had a great start of our championship week with the Nationals running on Friday and Saturday. 32 entries from from countries, and great race organisation under the PRO Bill O’Hara. The club has a lot to be proud of both on and off the water with the top three Irish Boats coming from the club and lots of compliments about our hospitatility and organisation.

Fingers crossed the Worlds Championship with continue in the same vein.

Results from the nationals are available here.

Gus Henry- An Appreciaton

It is with a heavy heart that we have heard of the passing of our Sligo Yacht Club Honorary Life Member, Former Commodore, GP14 Sailor, Mentor and Father to Niall, Aoife and Conal. Husband of predeceased Anne and of course a friend to all.

Our good friend Gus was a founder member of Sligo Yacht Club and guided the club to where it is today. For many many years he was the mainstay of SYC, from the 1950’s on Lough Gill to recent times, with his wise words. Even today his GP14 “Winki”, which he built in the early 1980’s, is still in use and on loan to new members for training and racing. This encourages sailing to continue in Sligo Bay.

Gus won Irish Sailing’s Volunteer of the Year in 2004 and hewas inducted into the Sligo Sporting Hall of fame in January 2007. These award was well deserved for his many years of dedication to Sailing for Sligo and Nationally.

I am delighted to note that Gus was able to visit the Clubhouse renovations, which I think he approved of.

His legacy is that Sligo Yacht Club is continuously growing.

Gus has left our Sligo Yacht Club in a better place than when he got it.

Karl Kerins – commodore.

Sailing Season Underway

It has been a busy start to the season. Our Junior Sailing Courses are in full flow. Our GP14 Course for adults went well with 5 full nights of sailing. We had to postpone a follow up weekend course which is now taking place on July 8th-9th. And of course preparation for the Mirror Worlds are continuing apace.
